MSI GE62 Apache Pro-239 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop
MSI GE62 Apache Pro-239 is one of the latest release 15.6 inch gaming laptops with high end features like the very powerful GTX 970M graphics card and Skylake Intel i7 processor, a full color backlit Steel series keyboard, Killer Gaming Network E2400, faster 802.11ac wireless, USB Type-C, large memory and storage space and more.
In terms of technical specs it comes with the sixth generation quad core Intel i7-6700HQ processor at 2.6GHz speed up to 3.5GHz with turbo boost for much better gaming performance and 4K video transcoding, multiple app data processing, also helped by the faster 12GB DDR4 RAM for great multitasking power, 1TB Serial ATA hard drive at 7200rpm rotating speed (no SSD here but a 7200rpm mechanical drive to give you more space for storage) and Windows 10 OS pre-installed with brand new features if you haven’t had the chance to use it yet. It has a 6-cell lithium ion battery but given the power of the processor and graphics card, you really won’t get more than 2-3 hours during gaming.
The 15.6 inch non-touch FHD LED-backlit display has the 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and the graphics card is the dedicated NVIDIA GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5 memory. For connectivity you have the DVD+RW Optical Drive, the latest 802.11ac WiFi with improved internet access in terms of coverage and strength, Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit Ethernet with RJ-45, 2 x USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port that can also be used for Thunderbolt 3 as video output, a miniDisplayPort, an HDMI output and an SD(HC/XC) card slot to upload images from your camera. Keyboard (Anti-Ghost key+ silver lining) is backlit, looks and feels great, you can choose the colour and is rather comfortable and ergonomic.
Aluminium black MSI GE62 Apache weighs 5.3 pounds and measures 15.07 x 10.23 x 1.06 inches- average weight and thickness for a 15.6 inch laptop but fairly compact for such a powerful gaming machine that sports such high specs and the ability to play the latest games at high settings, resolutions and at more than acceptable frame rates per second. So for all that it offers it is not particularly cheap and this is fair enough as long as you are an advanced gamer, you want a very powerful gaming machine and you have the cash to invest in it.
Intel i7-6700HQ has a very impressive Passmark benchmark score of 8040 at the moment which means you can basically run any software in the world and all will be fine, especially with the very generous 12GB DDR4 memory and GTX 970M is up there as one of the best mobile dedicated graphics cards that is currently known as the second best option after the GTX 980M and about 15% faster than the GTX 880M. You can run the most demanding games of 2015 and 2016 smoothly at Full HD resolution and highest details. And those extra quality functions like anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing are quite OK with most of the modern game titles.
What is missing on this machine is an SSD and what you have instead is a large 1024GB size storage but at least at 7200rpm spindle speed rather than 5400rpm and you have a free M.2 SATA slot in the laptop so you can easily install an SSD of your choice as they have also been coming down in price. It has a great Full HD display with wide viewing angles but it is not a touch display and we doubt many gaming machines have the touch function. As we mentioned this is not a low cost machine and price tag is a bit high but seems to be worth every penny, considering all the functions you’re getting and the overall quality.
