Acer Aspire R 15 Convertible Laptop R5-571TG-7229

Acer Aspire R 15 R5-571TG-7229 (NX.GP7AA.001) is a 2017 release brand new design Signature Edition convertible laptop for both work and play, with generous amounts of memory and storage, a powerful and energy efficient Intel i7-7500U processor, the mid-range GeForce 940MX graphics card, very good battery life and decent connectivity. Signature Edition basically means there is no junk or bloatware when you take it out of its box.

This is a cool convertible machine that can be used in different modes of the laptop, tablet and anything in between, like tent mode or movie display mode. You have a decent solid trackpad that feels intuitive and responsive and a very functional touchscreen that supports 10-finger touch and that lets you navigate through different applications. You can flip the display around its soft closing 360-degree hinge and use it in different modes and when in tablet mode, the keyboard gets deactivated automatically.

15.6 inch Full HD multi-touch widescreen LED-backlit display has the 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution offering beautiful crystal clear images with deep and rich colors. And with the IPS panel with up to 178-degree viewing angles horizontally and vertically and also has a zero air gap that helps with the angles. Technical specs include the Intel i7-7500U processor at 2.7 GHz speed up to 3.5 GHz with turbo boost, 12 GB DDR4 dual channel memory at 2133 MHz, 256GB Solid State Drive and Windows 10 operating system with Cortana Personal Assistant and Microsoft Edge browser.

The Intel i7-7500U (4MB L3 cache) has the Passmark benchmark score of 5258 as of now, meaning it is quite capable of a great variety of tasks and gaming as well. This is not really designed as an advanced gaming machine but the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 940MX with a 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM with a video card benchmark score of 1222 (somewhere between the integrated Intel Iris Pro 5200 and 6200) will let you play even some of the latest games at low to medium settings and WXGA resolution with more than acceptable frame rates per second.

You can expect a very long battery life of up to 9 hours from its 4-cell lithium ion battery (3220 mAh) at reduced light settings and for things like normal web browsing and video streaming. It has a convenient fingerprint reader supporting Windows Hello on the trackpad that makes it very easy for you to log in the system without you typing anything. It has the two integrated speakers with a subwoofer and the Acer True Harmony High-Performance Sound System but the sound quality is not great and that is probably the weakest point of this machine.

Gray Acer Aspire R 15 (NX.GP7AA.001) is both slim and durable with a brushed aluminum case, weighs 4.74 pounds and measures 14.6 x 10.1 x 0.8 inches. For connectivity, it comes with the 802.11ac wireless with 2×2 MU-MIMO (2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth 4.0, 2 x USB 3.0 ports- one of the with power-off charging feature, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a USB 2.0 port, a Secure Digital (SD) Card Reader, and an HDMI output with HDCP support. It has a high definition webcam with 1280 x 720-pixel resolution and a fully functional and great feeling backlit keyboard.

To sum up, the latest Acer Aspire Signature Edition R 15 has a solid and sturdy feel, beautiful modern design, fast processor, fast 256GB SSD, a mid-range graphics card, versatility offered by the 360-degree hinge and good connectivity. Audio quality is not the best and the 256GB built-in SSD storage may not be adequate for some people and the gaming performance is not strong for some of the latest games. But we certainly think you’re getting quite a lot for the money, considering how you’re often charged a premium for a convertible machine.
